Ab-Bb Trill without extra key
Is there an easier way to trill Ab to Bb without having the key for the right thumb?

Do you mean that you want to do that trill without any Ab/Bb trill mechanism, or you want to find a mechanism that does not involve the extra right thumb key?
If the latter, there is a mechanism that can be added to a bassoon. Fox calls its version the "articulated Ab/Bb trill." It permits the player to finger an Ab depressing the thumb Bb key, and just trilling the right hand pinky and ring fingers. There is no extra spatula.

If one is looking for mechanisms that are for the Ab/Bb trill, I suggest looking at Mike Sweeney's summary of the Heckel keywork options:

In addition to the one the W. Safford mentions, there is another (quite rare) that has the extra hole but no extra spatula. One fingers Ab then trills the Bb key. It is shown (the bassoon shown is mine) on Mike's pages by scrolling down to the Ab+Bb trill section and then clicking on "Ab+Bb with extra tone hole, without extra key". I happen to like it a lot -- Mike has played my basson and is likely the only other reference that you might easily find.

The easiest Ab-Bb trill fingering, according to my bassoon prof, is as follows: play Ab normally (pinky key) at the beginning of the trill; this is followed by Bb fingered normally (thumb key), except half-holing LH1; then, keeping the Bb key depressed, trill with the G key and lip the pitch down. If you have a good reed this one should work.

Oops, I double-checked: finger Bb normally WITHOUT half-holing LH1.

Try normal Ab and simply trill R 3.
A sleight of hand used by baroque recorder players if an appogiatura is required. Play proper Bb onto proper Ab (possibly repeat if the trill starts slowly), then start trilling R3. The ear is often well deceived.
I have even heard difficult trills start out at the required semitone but surreptitiously move to the easier tone trill - it sounds brighter but not often detected esp in fast trills. These I am more familiar with on recorder but I shall experiment on bassoon and advise if they work.

A good, consistent fingering I have for that trill is fingering an Ab, then trill your index finger of the RH while alternately trilling the D flick key.
